Lately I have been creating more social media and web assets for PR & Marketing here at Image; yesterday I made a set for a new series called THUMBS, created by Sean Lewis and Hayden Sherman. Just as a general sidenote: Image Comics creatives often make their own media assets (they have full power over their IP), though sometimes we produce advertising assets on our end too.
Hayden’s artwork is amazing to say the least, it has always grabbed me at a gut level. I designed IMAGE+ spreads for his and Sean’s last series together, THE FEW— though I have to say I am feeling all sorts of bummed that IMAGE+ doesn’t exist today for THUMBS. The colors and textures Hayden is using this time around really got me amped up; I’m imaging all kinds of interesting editorial layouts as I flip through some of the extra “trailer moments” Hayden sent my way.
I don’t think I would call Hayden’s work “messy” mostly because I think he is very methodical about it, but that art style really appeals to me alongside super structured sans serifs. His work is highly textured splashed with completely opaque pink marks; I imagined the black boxes I was placing as electrical tape, or crime scene ribbons, thrown down around the chaos happening in the story.
I would LOVE to create a brand alongside work like this some day; I think it’s time to make some zines of my own messy (like, actually messy, not Cool Artist Hayden “messy”) sketches.
